I bought only the 5000 Series head to use with a Televue 80mm OTA on my photo tripod. The 5000 head is without a doubt the best in its class. It is light weight yet handles my 8.5 lb .loaded OTA with little or no vibration. What I like the best is that it will slew the scope in both alt and az very smoothly without losing position when I lock the knobs. Also, once I set the tension for alt and az with the scope balanced and the heaviest EP I will use for the night I do not have to change the settings. The long dual handles make movement smooth and easy. I have used a variety of al/az mount/heads over the years and this is the best I have found. Construction quality is impressive. Another plus with this head is that it is located over the center of my tripod rather than off to the side. This adds to stability and less EP motion. A great head!!

I use this head for Oberwerk 25X100 mm binos and it works really well. For the money, this head is a very good buy. It performs in all movements smoothly and holds any position you set it at. Excellent construction and a has a solid feel to it.

I purchased the Oberwerk 5000 head for my binocular needs, and also an 80mm refractor telescope. I have had a couple of chances to use it now and found it to be an excellent head. First time I used it was to view comet 46p/Wirtanen. Very smooth movements and I just fell in love with it.
I am planning on a couple of other purchases and these will also be coming from Oberwerk. I do not believe I could have found a better place to deal with, or any better prices for the quality that they sell.

This entry-level video head is the same as VariZoom’s ChickenHead unit, although the Oberwerk-branded one ships with the optional second pan handle and an extra QR plate, both of which are appreciated additions. While it wouldn’t be my first choice for video work, it performs quite well in conjunction with large binoculars. I use it with Oberwerk’s 20x80mm Deluxe IIIs, and their seven-pound load balances nicely.

The built-in bubble level is functionally useless, as it’s positioned under the central body of the head, making it impossible to look directly down on it. In practice, though, it’s no problem, as the Oberwerk 5000 tripod it’s mounted on has its own bubble level. Also, the handle extension twist-locks (not the lever-locked angle adjustments higher up) don’t lock worth beans, but the handles don’t slide down inadvertently, so no undue problem there either.

As an FYI item, I used the extra QR plate, along with a bi-directional Arca-type QR camera clamp setup to allow convenient mounting of a DSLR. A small leveling base between the head and tripod column lets me level the camera horizontally, without endless leg adjusting.

    All-in-all, I consider my 5000 head a good-bang-for-the-buck purchase.

Excellent fluid head! I was originally using the Orion Tritech II tripod and head for my 90mm refractor and 20×80 bino. The problem was the lack of the counter balance spring which the OB 5000 head has. It makes all the difference in the world! Now when I look up, the scope doesn’t drag down. The 5000 has super smooth movements and is well-designed around ergonomics too. I use it on the Tritech legs for a lightweight set up. When I need something more heavy duty, I won’t hesitate to get the OB 5000 legs. Great products, excellent service, super fast shipping, and great people! Doesn’t get better than that.

After purchasing the Oberwerks BT100 XL-SD bino-telescope for my professional vixen tripod. I wanted a lightweight solution for birding as well. My Manfrotto, was rated a little low for the BT, so I purchased the Oberwerks 5000 tripod head. It is sturdy, lightweight on my Benro carbon fiber tripod and with your sale on mounting plates, is not fitted for my BT, spotting scope, and 80mm refractor. I can bird, astro view, and solar view with my 80mm triplet and Quark eyepiece with ease. The stability control is excellent with light tightening, I can still turn and aim with ease, and lock down when on target. Even the dual handlebars make it a pleasure to use. I thought they looked obtrusive at first, but thru use, I have proved that thought wrong. Finally, there was nothing else out there at this price point, that could put on this weight without wonky movement or failure to lockdown tight.

I mounted this on a parallelogram mount. It provides much smoother movement than the p-mount, and combined with the less-fluid movement of the p-mount’s rotation upward towards the zenith, it provides a smoother further adjustment vertically as well as horizontally. This makes the p-mount far more useful. especially for higher altitude viewing.

Excellent head, with binos on a parallelogram mount sticktion , clutches and tension have to be controlled or the head fails no matter what price. this head controls all three extremely well.
