SKU: OB5000T Category:

The Oberwerk 5000 Series tripod is the best value on the market for a heavy-duty tripod for binocular astronomy. Comparable to the much more expensive Manfrotto 475B tripod, it has a high load capacity (up to 24 lbs.) and even greater maximum height (7 feet!)- plenty of height to allow standing underneath a binocular when it is pointed up at the night sky. Tripod construction is black-anodized aluminum, with a total weight of 11 lbs.   Also included is a padded carrying case.

This tripod is ideal for use with the Farpoint UBM parallelogram mount.

  • Crank-up elevator column for easy height adjustments
  • Maximum height: 84″

If I were rating this as a photographic tripod, I would be more critical, but for its intended purpose here (supporting large binoculars), it performs well. If you’re using your binocs for astronomy, height is important, and the 5000 excels in that regard. The column rise is only 10 inches, but that’s sufficient for fine-tuning eyepiece height. The rise action is rather sloppy, but it locks down rock-solid. The leg braces and flip-locks function well, and the feet offer both rubber pads and metal spikes. The included case is of quite nice quality, especially for a “came-with-it” item. The case will accommodate the tripod with its companion 5000 head, but not with any other height-adding accessories (such as a leveling base or other quick-release adapters). Foam “leg warmers” will be appreciated on cold winter nights, as well as during blistering Southwest summer days. A shoulder strap and bubble level round out the ensemble. All things considered, the 5000 tripod is a purchase made with confidence.

The 5000 tripod was an excellent choice for use with my binoculars.
I doubt that it can be beat in a quality vs. cost contest.

Quick shipping, packaged well, no damage upon arrival.

Kudos to Oberwerk for quality products and first class customer service!
